Wall Street’s Favorite Hangout

Ulysses bar is on Stone Street, one of the oldest streets in Manhattan and in the center of the financial district. On weekday nights this is the place to take off your tie, get something to eat and have a few drinks and a cigarette with friends.

Although I am not a Wall Street employee, I love the atmosphere of this place—I associate it with everything I love about working in such a powerful and successful city. When I am here I feel the reward of knowing how far I’ve come, and all I’ve accomplished and sacrificed to get here. I’m proud I can kick back on a Thursday night with all the other New Yorkers and enjoy it. Visiting Ulysses is always a treat, from its pictures of James Joyce on the wall to the long list of world beers and northeastern food. In one of the most busy, stressful corners of the world, this bar is the best place to take a breath at the end of the day.

Like many scenes I experience in New York, Cole Porter’s songs have accompanied me on evenings like this in downtown Manhattan. Read a list of my favorite songs here

Spirituality in the Subway

One of the benefits of working in the religious press is that I have learned, over time and experience, how to properly talk about religion. We’ve all been advised, of course, to “never discuss religion and politics in polite company,” and most of the time that serves us well in avoiding a wicked argument or boring discourse. But religion, like most complicated subjects, can be discussed in an objective, intellectual manner that makes for fascinating and enlightening conversations, as long as its speakers know enough about it to make it worth attempting, that is.
